A piece of history

Say old man what’s that your holding and why are you looking so far off?

Well Maxine, this is a piece of history.  My step-father was a Marine of the Original First Marine Division who landed on Guadalcanal in 1942 during WWII and this was the New Testament that he carried through that entire campaign.  What makes it so historical is the dedication page and some notes he made.  The dedication page reads:

The White house
Washington

As Commander-in-Chief I take pleasure
in commending the reading of the Bible
to all who serve in the armed forces of the United States.
Throughout the centuries men of faiths
and diverse origins have found in the
Sacred Book words of wisdom, counsel and inspiration.
It is a fountain of strength and now,
as always, an aid in attaining the
 highest aspirations of the soul

Franklin D. Roosevelt

Can you imagine what would happen if a President or any government official wrote this today.  All hell would break loose.  The ACLU and every other anti-American outfit would be in the courts faster than you could say half-breed President.

Some of the notes my step-father wrote are names of the places he was shipped to after the campaign at Guadalcanal:
Wellington, NZ
Brisbane, Australia
Piecock, NZ
Melbourne, Australia

The notes also show his mother’s name and Jacksonville, Fla. as Nearest Relative.  The one note that means the most to me reads:
The World
at
Peace Aug 10
1945
That was then, this is now.
